The future of printing:
1— In the future is are the most academic writings the only thing that will be printed?
It seems that writings that are printed and tactile have more reliability behind them. Research today has been geared towards finding information on the internet. The problem is that anyone can post information on the internet making the sources not as legitimate. So the fact that published books hold more reliability shows that maybe as printing decreases in the future only the most important information will be printed.
2— The “zine” was a movement that brought back print and DIY. Is there going to be another phase like that?
The uproar of the zine movement developed a lot of creativity to express different layouts. It brought back the love for actual printed physical pieces. Technology has created a better and more advanced world for us but it has also made us lazy and it has begun to take away the beauty of print. Although print will never die, it will decrease immensely. I hope to see that in the future a zine like movement will occur again and print will live again. People need to realize how much print has to offer and the fact there is nothing else like it. As a graphic designer print will live on and I will help keep it afloat.
Yes technology has become such an important part of our lives. It may have changed how people do things and advanced our society but it also has seemed to have made us lazy. People have become too reliant on technology. We cannot forget the basic need of knowledge. Do not let technology do everything for you. Let it assist you and keep your mind as the most powerful tool you have.
Q: How will design change for magazines in order to keep the interest of the public?
A: This is where a designer can really come in on making a significant impact. They need to discover a way to display visually a new way to keep the psychical printed magazine on the shelves. Making the magazine more of a keepsake will grab the attention of people to the printed version over the internet. Yes the internet can store articles over the years and with a magazine it is a little more difficult to keep the material over several years. All I can say is that the psychical printed pieces should and hopefully not disappear because technology does not need to rule our life.
Q: What benefit does the internet have over the traditional form of printed media?
A: With the internet being a global sensation, they spread of news is almost instant. Gaining access to information is as simple as a click of a button. There is no need to wait for printed material because as soon as it happens it can be posted or blogged about. I would say this is a very beneficial aspect that technology has given. The positive outcome of spreading information that fast is such a revolutionary concept. It has and will continue to changed the media world.
A response to McLuhan’s article can go in many directions. The key aspect that I think a lot of people over look is the fact that this interview was in 1969. This changes how we should look at his responses because what if the same questions were asked today? From the interview I wanted to focus on McLuhan’s idea of how artists relate to the media.
The media is the way people perceive the world and see everything that is going on. It controls the image we as people see the future to be. For an artist it is different.
But the ability to perceive media-induced extensions of man, once the province of the artist, is now being expanded as the new environment of electric information makes possible a new degree of perception and critical awareness by non artists.
This is a fancy way McLuhan explains that artists are able to realize that the future really is the present. If you see the change now as they are happening you are seeing the future coming to life. Your perception is different if you look at time passing this way. Whatever is happening at the moment will directly impact what will happen next. That is why McLuhan states that we should not focus on the future because the we need to take the past more serious. So the media displays what the public sees as the future and we need to look at what has already happened before we move on.
1_ Packaging
It is extremely engaging when starting on a packaging project. Just thinking of new ways to be creative and get people to notice your design over another design. Also I love the idea of developing packaging and seeing sold in stores.
2_Land Art
This has always been an interest of mine. Creating some sort of art that incorporates land. The fact that it is out in nature where everyone can see what I have done.
3_Identity
I know I could be better with this but creating a brand from the ground up really excites me. Especially the logo because it is the main image of the brand.
4_Expressive Type
As a designer I have a lot of passion towards type. It is so beautiful and each letter is its own piece of art. Now taking that and being as expressive as I can really opens up my creativity and love for design.
5_Beer Labels
I have never really worked on a beer specific label but all the different types of beers all have a line of art for each type of brewed beer. It is a type of identity but I specifically want to work with a brewery.
6_Athletic Design
Anything that has to do with large sports brand like Nike and Adidas would be amazing to work with. In particular a soccer team would be the choice to design for.
7_Shoe Design for pro-athlete
Pretty much because working and collaborating design with a professional athlete seems to be really interesting.
8_Jacket Designs.
I have an obsession with jackets and designing ones that people actually want to buy and wear would make me so happy.
9_Web design
Everything now days is online and to have skills with web design is very beneficial.
10_Magazine Layouts_WIRED
The style of WIRED magazine really grabs my attention. I feel working for a company like them and designing their magazine would be really engaging.
Over the past few year the recession has actually changed the field of graphic design. It has become extremely more competitive which has changed the way designers approach the job world. We know that in order to succeed in any field of work you need to have the skills required but in the graphic design environment you have to express yourself more creatively and stand apart even more so when potential jobs look at your work they will then see the skills you have. That is another major way the recession has changed graphic design because designers are thinking a lot more different then before.
To me the recession is both good and bad. Obviously it is mostly bad because it is a recession and people are struggling and the job market has decreased. The bright side to look at is that since it is more competitive, only the best designers will be hired. On the other hand the recession does make people turn to design things themselves which usually turns out to be a bad choice. Some say that because of the recession many companies will turn It is all confusing and I hope that it does turn around in the near future because people should not have to struggle through life.
Now because this recession has designers worried you need to think about the best solution to get through it. I would say first off make sure your work is as best as it can possibly be. Stand out by doing things that have never been done before. Also when it comes to designing do it out of passion and do things that can make an impact on the world. If potential employers see that your passion reflects in your designs and they are so strong they actually make a physical impact then they will see your abilities.
Love to design and design out of passion because it will come through within your work.
Milton Glaser_
As a well known designer, Milton Glaser has done a lot for the design community. Some major designs he has done include the I heart NY logo, the Bob Dylan poster and in 1974 he developed Milton Glaser Incorporated.
Milton works to influence people with his designs and with art and education he is able to communicate in a variety of ways. To think of such a successful and dedicated designer and the process they go through when working on a project is crazy. Yes they are people just like anyone else but they are obviously doing something that allows them to stand out in the design world. The simplicity of the I heart NY logo seems to most people that it must not have taken long to come up with but in reality his process from start to finish was just as long and complex as any other project. With Milton Glaser Inc. working as a busy design studio Milton continues to produces and direct projects day by day.
Alberto Cerriteno_
I came across Alberto Cerriteno on an art blog and his work amazed me. Alberto is a illustrator and designer from Mexico. He takes inspiration from pop surrealism, vinyl toys and cartoons. His style of art and design has developed into a very unique signature that allows him to stand out with his skills.
Alberto has many years experience at different agencies with different areas of design. He is now in works with collaboration of ideas from people around the world. Alberto’s work environment has moved around and being from Mexico he has seen difference in the way designers work. The process of Alberto’s work is based around his illustrations. He works to create unique characters that allow him to use that style on the design.
Johnny Earle_
Also known for his development of the Johnny Cupcakes brand in 2001. The extremely fast growing company is branded in the style of a bakery and a cupcake silhouette with cross bones beneath it is the logo that represents the brand. Johnny Cupcakes sell a variety of apparel and nic-naks.
The process for John Earle and his designs really lucked out for him. Initially the branding idea was a joke but turned out to be an interesting campaign. Earle looks to be the type of designer that has fun doing what he does. If his work sells then it sells but because he made it such a successful brand people have been drawn to it and he will continue to grow in popularity. He wants people to be part of the brand to give it more feeling. He only sells his apparel through his stores to make the brand more unique and this allows the stores to expand more and have more significance in the brand. The bakery style keeps the working environment interesting and makes people appreciate it more.
Whatever Earle is doing and has been doing from the beginning is making him very successful. Taking a cupcake themed brand and accomplishing so much already has turned out to be Earle’s calling.
I wanted to focus my questions in the direction of the work environment but this also ties into the process and the inspiration. I want to know what excites these designers in their working environment and what keeps their mind rolling along project after project.
?’s—
1— When starting a new project where do you go to for inspiration? Are there special routines that you do to prepare for the project?
2— Does designing feel like a job to you or something that you love doing and just happen to get paid for it?
3— In the entire process of design for a project, what is your favorite part?
4— You you get stuck at a certain part of the design process, what do you do to get your mind rolling again?
5— In a designing environment, what would you say are the best things to have around to help the process in anyway?

Running-
I used to be a pretty fat boy growing up all the way through high school. The funny thing is I played sports my whole life so I never understood why I was so fat. People always made fun of me for being the slower one on the team or I would not be as good because I just wasn’t fast enough. So I ran and ran and ran some more. Running is my escape and one of my biggest inspiration because of what it has done for me.
Family-
A lot of people will say there family inspires them. The reasons are obvious. My family means more to me then anything in the world and all I want to do is make them proud. That is where the inspiration comes from. I strive for greatness because I want to give my family a reason to be proud of me. One day they will understand how much they have helped me through life.
Myself-
It might sound weird but yes I feel I gain inspiration from myself. I want to go far in life and that is only going to happen based off of what I can do for myself. If I have a positive attitude about life and the things that I am doing I can see things differently.
Friends-
My friends do tend to give me a hard time, but I know they mean well. For anyone, a friend can change your mood in a matter of seconds. You have a special bond with these people that allows you to interact with them as your true self. If you never had interaction then your mind has no where to go. Hanging out and having fun expands your creativity and just simply opens you mind to new things.
Sports-
Along with my love for designing there is also a love for sports. It is the physical activity that sparks my interest. I may spend hours upon hours designing which is fun and I love it but taking a break and going outside or to the gym to play sports really helps me regain focus when I am done.
Music-
Whenever I am on a computer or at a desk designing I always have music. This allows me to escape into my work. All the distractions are zoned out and all I here is the lyrics of the song or my creativity popping. The thing is I get into different kinds of moods when designing and that means only certain types of music will inspire me. Otherwise I feel bored and I get to drawn in on designing and I have nothing that is pumping me up.
Smiles-
everyone loves a smile. This particular trait of a person is my favorite. It gives a genuine emotion because you can tell if a person is giving you a fake smile. I mean I really don’t know why but when I am interacting with people and they are happy and smiling it makes me feel good which puts me in the mood to design.
Blogs-
Similar to a lot of people I have that list of blogs that I go to everyday. Most of them are about design but there are many sports blogs that present interesting material. The internet has brought great things to our society and you are able to see things at a click of the mouse and these things are all over the world. Usually blogs post amazing works of art and it pushes me to work hard and maybe one day my designs will be spread around the world wide web.
Land art-
There is something that instantly caught my eye with land art. The first real project that got me interested way Christo and Jeanne Claudes Running Fence. I think the thing that interests me most is the size and time out into the project. Also I love showcasing my work and I feel that with land are you put it out there for everyone to interact with and people will see your creativity within our everyday life.
Aztec Art-
I have done many research projects growing up and my Hispanic background has triggered an everlasting interest in Aztec art. That particular style of art drives me crazy but in a good way. It is so beautiful and the meaning behind each piece so powerful. I always try to bring the Aztec style of art into my designing but I am always struggling with it and it just doesn’t feel right. The statues masks, paintings and pottery are insanely intriguing to me and I will one day have a room in my house dedicated to Aztec art.
It is amazing what design has done for the world. From the process to the finished product or idea, design has become our way of solving problems. Now that I said that this whole “parachuting in” concept is absurd. I mean it is a good concept, the absurd aspect is that of people not liking it. The difference in cultural experience and background allows for greater knowledge in a collaboration. If there is a problem in need of solving then the most logical solution would be to bring in as many people as possible. This could open doors to ideas that may never have been developed without the diversity in designers.
In the human centered design, they were successful in the process of gathering together with the people of Brownsville. If cultures feel that designers are not there to help, then a meeting on a common ground allows for connection and more development. By diverging first and creating a major basis for concept development, the designers are able to reach ideas unknown of. Taking those most promising ideas and converging more in depth is just breaking down the process and developing the strongest concept possible. Though it is difficult to converge to a single concept this article explained that by finding common concepts with in the ideas there became groups that had themes that allowed for others to see at a glance ideas that could be put into action and become a solution.
